When I decided to write this review I was actually in love with my Words with Friends iPhone app. I was connecting with long lost friends and playing them at scrabble even though we barely spoke. I couldn’t put my phone down. I would stare at the screen until the early morning trying to think of possible word combinations and how I could get the most points.
But then I started losing. And now I’ve realised I’m not very good at scrabble, I can’t be bothered playing.
The app itself is great. You download it (for free) and connect to Facebook so you can see which of your other friends have the app. But unlike most apps it won’t show up on your Facebook wall and embarrass you, letting everyone know you want to play scrabble. I was surprise to see how many of my friends were already playing.
After that it’s very simple. You challenge someone to a game of scrabble!
The game was very addictive. There is a lot of strategizing, saving your high point letters for the perfect opportunity, and not setting your opponent up for a “double word”, “double letter” or “triple letter” points square. You don’t have to play continually either. You can close the game and go back to it when you’re ready to play your turn. If you are not in the game, you will receive a message when an opponent has played their turn, so you always know what’s going on. And if you want to congratulate your opponent on their high-scoring (probably made-up) word then you can also message them within the game. What’s more is that you can play multiple games with different friends at the same time!
The one thing I don’t like about this game, however, is the annoying ads. You have to click through them after every game which is frustrating. Although I did download the free version so maybe the paid for versions feature fewer ads and the game playing is faster.
I was addicted to this game for about a week then I lost several games and I got so annoyed I didn’t want to play anymore.
BUT now I’ve found some of the cheat sites available on the net and it’s kicked the whole thing off again. I’m winning more games and I’m enjoying scrabble again!
Just don’t tell my friends. . .
