The news that Beyoncé is expecting her first child has broken the record for the most tweets per second on micro blogging site Twitter. After announcing her pregnancy by showing off her baby bump during her performance at the MTV video music awards, fans flooded twitter with 8,868 tweets per second, smashing the previous record of 7,196 set in July after Japan beat the US in the Women’s World Cup final.
29 year old Beyoncé has been hinting that she is ready to start a family with Husband Jay-Z for some time now, but that didn’t stop the excitement when news of her pregnancy was confirmed. Beyoncé broke the news when she ended her performance of ’Love on Top’ by unbuttoning her sequin coat and rubbing her belly, announcing to the audience “I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside me.”
Not only did this news break the current record, it also received more tweets than events such as the death of Osama Bin Laden in May, which spurred only 5,000 tweets a second, and the devastating earthquake and tsunami, which peaked at 5,530 tweets per second when it hit Japan on 11 March. It also seems that celebrity baby news is more popular than that of a royal wedding, with Will and Kate’s big day in April only mustering 3,966 tweets per second.
